5 Times When You Should Not Quit

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

Just like there are some good reasons to quit, there are some bad ones too. Here are five really bad reasons to quit:

1. You should not quit simply because you don’t want to work hard. One of the worse reasons to quit is because you are lazy. This may be the most common reason people quit things and it’s the fastest way to a mediocre life. In Latin, mediocre means halfway up the mountain. That’s bad because no climber ever achieved success by going halfway. In fact, this is what gives the concept of quitting a bad rap. It conjures images of the couch potato and leads to the stigma and negative connotations associated with quitting.

2. It’s also not a good idea to quit because you are not rich yet. It is a mistake to chase after the next greatest thing in search of super-quick riches. No good thing comes without hard work, so it is important to be willing to work for what you want and resist the next shiny thing. This can open you up to all sorts of scams and rip-offs.

3. You should not quit just because you feel under-appreciated. This is especially true in employment situations. Many organizations fail to understand how to properly cultivate good employees. This is not a function of you; it’s a function of bad management. But that’s not a good enough reason to quit. It may be better to find ways to celebrate your own accomplishments and accumulate as much benefit from the company as you can before checking out.

4. You should not quit because you covet you coworker’s career. At first blush, this may sound like a moral imperative related to the notion that one should not set their desires on things that are forbidden. Whether this is true or not, it is a bad idea to quit your job because your coworker makes more money or has a better position than you. Instead of comparing yourself to others, your time will be better spent by focusing on the task at hand and making yourself valuable to the organization. You will be much better off if you learn to appreciate your own accomplishments and begin to focus on what matters to you. You should stop focusing on others and start focusing on yourself.

5. It is not a good idea to quit just because everyone is telling you to quit. Bad reason. Stop listening to naysayers. The motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said that no one ever erected a statue to a critic. You should always pay attention to good advice and be open to feedback. But it is extremely important that you evaluate your options before you make a decision. You should never quit simply because other people are telling you to.
